Steelers bubble players fighting for their NFL lives this preseason

Time is still on the side of each player on the Pittsburgh Steelers who is fighting for a roster spot. Those on the roster bubble who have struggled at training camp, however, are running out of time. They must produce a fantastic finish to camp and create momentum during the upcoming preseason games. If they fail to accomplish either of those tasks, they should expect to become a casualty.

Steelers bubble players fighting for their NFL lives this preseason

The Steelers have a handful of roster battles occurring that could end either way.

It will be up to the players to make their mark on the competition in hopes of landing a job when the roster is cut to 53. Some perform better in stadium environments, which can influence decisions. It's not the end of the line for these roster bubble players yet, but they are losing time with each passing moment.

Pittsburgh Steelers have notable roster bubble players trying to stick with the team

Mark Robinson, LB

After a slow start to training camp, Mark Robinson has started to build some positive momentum. The veteran linebacker must fend off rookie Carson Bruener to convince the coaching staff he is worth keeping around. The good news for Robinson is his ability to possibly play different spots. He gained snaps at the fullback position, which could help his cause to earn a roster spot.

He is battling in his fourth training camp with the Steelers. Robinson was their seventh-round pick during the 2022 NFL Draft. He transitioned to the linebacker position late in his college career, having been a running back. His ability to be a solid fullback could secure him a job. Unless Pittsburgh only keeps four inside linebackers, Robinson could win a job with a strong preseason.

Connor Heyward, TE

With undrafted rookie DJ Thomas-Jones miraculously back in the fold, Connor Heyward's job security sank. The younger brother of Cam Heyward has a clear path to the roster, but things were grim before Thomas-Jones suffered an injury setback. With the undrafted rookie back in the conversation, it's possible Heyward could struggle to stick on the roster after training camp.

Heyward remains on the roster bubble, which is a new situation for him to deal with.

He has demonstrated the ability to play multiple positions, but he struggles to excel in any of them. He is a solid depth player who can help on special teams, which he must show during the preseason campaign. Heyward is in dangerous territory, but unless Thomas-Jones shoves him off the roster, he could have a shot.

Beanie Bishop, CB

His release is unexpected at this point, but Beanie Bishop is on the roster bubble. The injury to rookie cornerback Donte Kent has calmed Bishop's worries, but it's not stable. Kent has missed a chunk of practices at training camp due to injury, which has slowed down his momentum. The rookie was making plays, which was diminishing Bishop's chances of making the team.

Unless Kent returns from injury with a vengeance, Bishop shouldn't be too concerned about his roster spot. He hasn't done anything spectacular at training camp, but the preseason schedule is where Bishop must come alive. The former undrafted free agent produced four interceptions last season, and he has a healthy amount of starting experience, which should help his cause.

Scotty Miller, WR

Things looked bleak for Scotty Miller heading into training camp, but his situation has since worsened significantly.

The veteran receiver sits in a crowded group at the position with additions potentially on the horizon. He has made some plays at camp, but not enough to remain off the roster bubble. It would be shocking to see the veteran stick with the club this season.

He was with the team last year but failed to secure a consistent role. Miller has shown flashes of brilliance in the past, but he fails to be consistent. With younger options on the depth chart, it appears crystal clear that he will not make the team. Unless he goes out and creates the best preseason performance by a receiver in NFL history, Miller will be on the list of final roster cuts.
