Steelers' Cam Heyward Admits His Burning Desire To Add A Missing Accolade To His Resume

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a significant step on Tuesday by extending captain Cam Heyward’s contract with a three-year deal worth $45 million. This extension includes $29 million in new money and $16 million fully guaranteed, keeping Heyward with the Steelers through the 2026 season.

Heyward made headlines this offseason by skipping the initial phase of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) for the first time in his career. Despite this uncharacteristic move, he eventually returned to the team, prioritizing his presence over contract negotiations. This decision underscored his commitment and character, qualities that have endeared him to Steeler Nation.

Known for his selflessness and willingness to do the dirty work, Heyward's role in the Steelers' defense often involves wreaking havoc, stopping the run, and creating opportunities for others to shine.

After signing his new deal, Heyward spoke with Brian Batko about the support he received from former players, noting that Brett Keisel was the first to congratulate him. Heyward recognizes that his role in Pittsburgh now extends beyond his own performance; he is dedicated to guiding and mentoring the next generation of Steelers.

"I think I’ve gotten to see the cycle. I am the bridge in that metaphor, but man, I want to conquer that mountain that that first part got to do. I just told them about things that happened in the past and what we have done and all the things I have experienced."

Despite his remarkable career, Heyward hasn't enjoyed the level of playoff success that many former Steelers legends have experienced. While Heyward has been a dominant force in Pittsburgh, the team has struggled to make a significant postseason impact. This lack of success isn't due to Heyward's performance; he has been a key factor in keeping the Steelers competitive, even amid struggles with offense and quarterback play.

Heyward is determined to bridge the gap between the Super Bowl glory of past Steelers teams and the current roster. He is eager to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl, not just for himself but for his current teammates. Heyward's drive to reach that pinnacle reflects his commitment to bringing championship success to the Steel City.

"When I was young, it was just about me being a sponge and you know, just learning from those guys. It wasn’t me saying anything, it was just me shutting up most of the time. I am in a different position now, but can’t do it alone."

Heyward is relieved to have his contract situation resolved and is looking forward to focusing on the upcoming season. The next player on Steelers fans’ radar is tight end Pat Freiermuth, who many believe could secure a new deal before the 2024 season begins. However, time is running short.

Steelers' Cam Heyward Wasn't Healthy During 2023

Heyward's approach to his contract negotiations was notably mature, and the Steelers made the right choice in rewarding him. Despite battling a groin injury throughout much of the 2023 season, which he described as feeling like he was playing on one leg, Heyward remained a steadfast leader.

Some fans believed he had fallen off but Heyward doesn't view it that way. He believes his struggles during the 2023 season were because of his injury.

This offseason, Heyward underwent surgery on his groin and is expected to be fully healthy for the new season. At 35, he is motivated to prove he is worth every penny of his new deal and more. Steelers fans are eagerly anticipating a return to form from a healthy Heyward in 2024.
