Steelers caught sleeping as star edge rusher beats T.J. Watt to extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers are standing on uncertain ground right now, and it all circles back to T.J. Watt.

As the four-time All-Pro enters the final year of his contract, negotiations between Watt and the front office are heating up. Watt, quite understandably, is seeking a deal that matches his impact and longevity. 

While Pittsburgh shuffled its feet with Watt, the Washington Commanders signed Miller to a one-year deal, and for Pittsburgh, that should sting a bit. Here was a perfect opportunity to bring in a future Hall of Famer as a security blanket while Watt’s extension is in limbo.

Since 2017, Watt has been the heart and soul of this Steelers defense. He’s racked up 108 sacks and 33 forced fumbles, often swinging momentum when Pittsburgh needed it most.

With a resume like that, it’s hard to argue with his demands. The man is the Steelers' defense. But with tension building—and Watt already skipping OTAs and mandatory minicamp this offseason—you’d think the front office might have explored a backup plan. 

That’s where Von Miller could have come in.

Von Miller may not be in his prime anymore, but with 129.5 sacks since 2011 and a reputation for stepping up in big moments, his presence would’ve offered Pittsburgh breathing room in the event negotiations with Watt sour further.

Look, I don’t believe Watt will hold out for the 2025 season. He’s a competitor through and through. But let’s not kid ourselves—this situation is teetering.

And while the Steelers are betting on getting a deal done before training camp, bringing in a short-term veteran like Miller could’ve lightened the load and perhaps even strengthened their bargaining position.

Instead, Miller is headed to D.C., while Pittsburgh continues to talk and hope. It’s a risky game. If things go sideways with Watt— including a prolonged holdout — the Steelers will be left scrambling. 

And there won’t be a Von Miller waiting around next time.

I love the loyalty this franchise has shown to its stars, and I hope T.J. Watt retires a Steeler. But this was a golden chance to give the team some security while showing their best player they respect his leverage and the team’s long-term health. They let it pass. Let’s hope it doesn’t come back to bite them.
