Steelers Continue To Face Uncertain Future At Quarterback: 'This Is The Same Mason Rudolph Who In 2019 Lost His Job To Duck Hodges'

It’s no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a chaotic and uncertain quarterback situation, and it has become one of the most talked about topics in the media this offseason. The Steelers currently lack a definitive starting quarterback, which has caused an ongoing debate. Everyone seems to have opinions and speculations about who the team should have as their starter. The uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position has caused both anticipation and concern as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Steelers Continue To Face Uncertain Future At Quarterback: 'This Is The Same Mason Rudolph Who In 2019 Lost His Job To Duck Hodges'

If the regular season kicked off today, Mason Rudolph would most likely be the starting quarterback. He’s received a fair amount of support from both the fan base and the team’s front office, who appear confident in his ability to lead the offense if needed. However, during a recent appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo shared some thoughts that hinted at concern regarding Rudolph’s readiness and long-term viability as the starter, adding a new layer of uncertainty to an already unsettled quarterback situation.

"This is the same Mason Rudolph who lost his job in 2019 to Duck [Devlin] Hodges," Fittipaldo shared. Right, I mean Hodges wasn’t even an undrafted free agent, he was a rookie tryout guy."

Devlin "Duck" Hodges was a memorable player for Steelers fans during the 2019 NFL season. He signed in Pittsburgh as a rookie free agent. Initially waived, he was re-signed to the practice squad and later promoted to the active roster following Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger's season-ending injury that September. Hodges made his NFL debut in Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens and earned his first start the following week. Known for his confidence, Hodges quickly became a fan favorite. After his time with the Steelers, he had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Rams before retiring in 2022.

Many fans consider Rudolph to be a fan favorite within the Steelers community. Although he has spent the majority of his career serving as a backup quarterback, Rudolph has consistently demonstrated resilience and readiness whenever he was called upon. Over the years, he has stepped into some high-pressure situations and delivered solid performances, even leading the team to some very important wins. His familiarity with the team’s system and his presence in the locker room have all contributed to the admiration he receives from Steelers fans. Despite not always being in the spotlight, Rudolph’s contributions have not gone unnoticed, and many fans appreciate the role he’s played in helping the team succeed through times of uncertainty.

Still, despite Rudolph's support, it’s no secret that the Steelers remain the frontrunners to land veteran free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Ever since rumors first began linking Rodgers to the Steelers, it’s felt like an eternity for fans eagerly awaiting a resolution. While there’s no denying Rodgers’ impressive resume, with a Super Bowl title, multiple MVP awards, and a reputation as one of the most talented quarterbacks of his generation, the delay in his decision has created frustration and concern among fans. Many are starting to question whether Rodgers is truly committed or if the ongoing wait is a sign of hesitation.

Steelers Have Weapons To Support The Quarterback

While the quarterback position remains a major point of uncertainty for the Steelers, the organization has made several impactful moves this offseason to enhance and fortify their offensive unit. Recognizing the need to provide weapons regardless of who ends up under center, the Steelers made a big move by trading for veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf. Known for his combination of size, strength, and speed, Metcalf brings a strong presence to the wide receiver corps. His ability to make contested catches and break tackles  makes him a valuable asset for any quarterback.

The 2025 NFL Draft has also come to a close, and the Steelers made several selections aimed at strengthening their offense for the upcoming season. One of the most notable additions came in the form of Kaleb Johnson, a dynamic and explosive running back known for his blend of speed and power. Johnson’s ability to break tackles and gain yards between the tackles adds a much needed physical element to the Steelers’ offense.
