It's looking more and more like the Pittsburgh Steelers will need the services of a rookie quarterback in 2025, and the team could have the opportunity to make that happen next week.
While Miami's Cam Ward is expected to be taken No. 1 overall by the Tennessee Titans, there are a litany of other names that the Steelers could choose from later in the first round or even on Day 2.
The biggest Wild Card might be Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, who was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last season, but whose draft stock has fallen in the past month or so.
It's unknown if he'll be around at No. 21 when the Steelers have their first pick.
But another name that has been linked to Pittsburgh is Alabama's Jalen Milroe, and at least one writer thinks he's got the biggest upside of the remaining quarterbacks after Ward.
NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah commented on Milroe having the highest upside of the quarterbacks.
“Talking to teams, though, if you were to use the word the phrase with him that’s used more than any other of all the quarterbacks in this draft, that’s the lottery ticket," Jeremiah said. "If you want to just take a lottery ticket that you could hit huge on if it all works out and all comes together, he’s got the highest upside of anybody in this draft, and that goes all the way up to Cam Ward at No. 1.”
While Milroe frequently displayed his massive arm strength and mobility while at Alabama, he also made a lot of mistakes. And Jeremiah recognized that.
“But he is a long way from getting there," Jeremiah said. "So to me it’s a classic second-round pick. You get your first pick in the bag. You feel comfortable about it. It’s a double off the wall. Now you can stop choking up and swing for the fences with Jalen Milroe. That’s how just about everybody universally views him. We’ll see where he ends up going.”
Do the Steelers think Milroe is the answer under center in Pittsburgh? We'll find out in less than a week.
