The Pittsburgh Steelers are cutting former New York Jets second round pick Denzel Mims from their 90-man roster.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut wide receiver Denzel Mims from the 90-man roster, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Mims joined the team last season on their practice squad after the Detroit Lions cut him following training camp in 2023.
Pittsburgh added him in part due to his affiliation with former wide receives coach Frisman Jackson, who coached Mims while he was an All-American at Baylor. However, with multiple additions to the team like Quez Watkins, Scotty Miller, and others, Mims seemed on the outside looking in after a quiet Spring. On top of that, he has limited special teams, which will help guys like Dez Fitzpatrick and Marquez Callaway.
Mims was a second round pick out of Baylor by the New York Jets. Pittsburgh passed on him in the 2020 NFL Draft in favor of Chase Claypool. But the Jets moved off Mims last season, trading him to the Lions. Mims did not get many snaps in New York, instead being usurped by Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore, and others in his tenure. Pittsburgh scooped him up after Detroit waived him off their injured reserve following an ankle injury he suffered in training camp.
A bigger-bodied wide receiver, Mims did fill a void for the Steelers that now needs replaced. There could be plenty of options from the UFL to add into the room, including UFL Offensive Player of the Year Hakeem Butler, who spent last year with the Steelers in training camp.
For Mims, he is now looking for this fourth NFL home after fizzling out in Pittsburgh. The Steelers, meanwhile, are still searching for another wide receiver to put next to George Pickens. Standout performances from guys like Calvin Austin III should give them some leeway, but the rumors around players like Brandon Aiyuk should continue for the Steelers throughout the offseason.
