The Pittsburgh Steelers currently find themselves with multiple unanswered questions on the offensive side of the ball prior to the start of mandatory minicamp. After trading star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason, the Steelers lack a true wide receiver two (WR2) option behind DK Metcalf. Metcalf, who was acquired by Pittsburgh in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, is expected to play a major role on the team's offense in 2025. With many questions continuing to circulate around Metcalf and the rest of the Pittsburgh offense, fans have continued to question where the star receiver has been throughout Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
Metcalf, a two-time Pro Bowler and six-year veteran, has been one of the more notable players absent from OTAs over the past week. Despite his absence, he is expected to be with the team in Pittsburgh soon and should have no problem being a full participant throughout mandatory minicamp. The Steelers signed the former Seahawk to a five-year, $150 million contract directly after trading for him, as many fans continue to disagree with Metcalf's decision to not partake in OTAs following the massive contract extension.
With frustration continuing to grow around Pittsburgh, insider Gerry Dulac gave his thoughts when asked about the situation.
"It is optional, but I'm with you," Dulac stated when answering a fan regarding Metcalf's offseason presence.
With Metcalf yet to report to the team and the start of minicamp just around the corner, it is widely expected that the former Seahawk will be in Pittsburgh sooner rather than later. At 6'4", 235 pounds, Metcalf should have no problem picking up right where he left off in Seattle as one of the top receivers in the entire NFL.
With the Pickens trade solidifying Metcalf as the Steelers' clear cut wide receiver one (WR1), the team continues to search for a true WR2 option.
Steelers Have Multiple Quality Wide Receivers Still Available In Free Agency
As the Steelers continue to wait for Metcalf to report to Pittsburgh, the team finds themselves evaluating the market for another offensive weapon. With many top options remaining available in free agency, the Steelers are expected to be in pursuit of former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver, Gabe Davis. Davis, who is scheduled to make an official visit to Pittsburgh this week, may prove to be a cheap and reliable option behind Metcalf.
Despite somewhat of a down year in his first season as a Jaguar, Davis shined during his time in Buffalo with Josh Allen. Davis, who spent four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, may become a major addition to the Steelers' wide receiver room should he prove to be healthy. With many options continuing to emerge for Pittsburgh, both veterans Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen remain available in free agency as well.
With speculation surrounding Metcalf not appearing at OTAs, the Steelers reportedly do not view the matter as a major issue and expect Metcalf to be with the team in the near future. With the start of mandatory minicamp just days away, Pittsburgh should be able to get a much better understanding of where Metcalf and the rest of the Steelers' wide receiver room stands. Steelers fans shouldn't worry about Metcalf. It's the depth behind him that have many in the fan base questioning its potential.
