The Pittsburgh Steelers have added several new faces to their roster this offseason, making big changes on both the offense and defense. Most recently, the Steelers have acquired both veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. Both players come with years of experience and proven talent, creating a lot of excitement for fans about how their presence can elevate the roster.
However, there appears to be some off the field concerns surrounding Ramsey. During a recent chat session hosted by Steelers insider Brian Batko, a fan asked about past rumors regarding Ramsey’s potential locker room issues. Batko responded with a straightforward and honest take, one that may not sit well with Ramsey supporters.
"To me, the jury is out on how Jalen Ramsey will fit in with the locker room here," Batko wrote. "Not sure I'd call him a troublemaker, but a healthy dose of skepticism is required when three teams now have decided it was best for them to trade him. I saw one of the longtime Dolphins beat writers call him a 'mercenary.' If that's the case, you have to wonder what will happen when things go wrong."
Recent reports have surfaced pointing to locker room issues and specifically naming Ramsey as part of the problem. Funny enough, after the trade, Smith, the other player involved in the deal, gave an interview where he acknowledged there were indeed locker room issues in Miami. However, he didn’t mention or even suggest that Ramsey had anything to do with it.
Because of this, questions have been raised about Ramsey’s long-term fit with the team. The Steelers have experienced locker room issues in the past, and it’s a situation they’re likely trying to avoid repeating. In fact, reports suggest that similar concerns played a role in the decision to trade former star wide receiver George Pickens.
The Steelers certainly didn’t bring Ramsey in with the expectation of dealing with potential locker room issues. Instead, they brought him in because of the great value he offers on the field. Ramsey is known for his versatility, which is a major asset to the team, as he’s capable of playing multiple positions within the secondary, including cornerback and safety. His presence not only strengthens the overall depth of the defense, but also adds a layer of veteran experience that can benefit younger players and elevate the unit as a whole.
Thanks to this versatility, Ramsey is expected to make a major impact on the Steelers’ defense this season. The Steelers are covering the majority of Ramsey’s substantial contract, although the Dolphins are still helping out. While the Steelers do have some financial breathing room, investing in a high-profile veteran like Ramsey comes with expectations, and the team is certainly hoping to get a strong return on that investment through his performance on the field.
With both Ramsey and Smith bringing veteran experience, their additions continue the clear trend the Steelers have followed this offseason. While the team is in the middle of a rebuilding phase, they’re also focused on staying competitive right now. By combining seasoned veterans with promising young rookies, Pittsburgh is taking a strategic approach that few teams manage to pull off successfully.
For example, earlier this offseason, the Steelers brought in veteran cornerback Darius Slay, who played a part in the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl victory last season. Slay brings not only on-field talent, but also valuable leadership to the locker room. He’s already expressed interest in mentoring second-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr. This kind of mentorship could have a lasting impact on the Steelers’ secondary and the overall success of the franchise in the years ahead.
