The Pittsburgh Steelers have never been a team to push coaches out the door, and one NFL insider believes that Mike Tomlin will remain in Pittsburgh as long as he wants to.
The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t big on change when it comes to head coaches. Chuck Noll took over in 1969 and remained in Pittsburgh until 1991. Bill Cowher took over until he retired in 2006. Mike Tomlin has been the coach ever since.
That's 55 years and three coaches ... by far the least coaching turnover of any NFL team. And according to one NFL analyst, Tomlin isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
On a recent episode of the Chipped Ham & Football podcast, NFL insider Ian Rapoport explained that Tomlin’s latest contract extension is probably not his last.
"I would just say, for me, he's going to have a Steelers job as long as he wants, as he should," Rapport said. "And I don't know, look, at some point, it's the end for everyone, and at some point, Mike Tomlin will know.
"But I just haven't sensed him losing energy, losing patience, or not liking it as much. Those are the things you sort of can sense, but with Tomlin, I don't get any of it. So, I was not surprised he got an extension."
Tomlin has yet to post a losing season as the coach of the Steelers. He has a Super Bowl ring, and has coached some great teams that have just fallen short.
Does he deserve to coach the black and gold as long as he wants to? That's a matter of Steelers argument ... that might go on for a long time while he's still on the sideline.
