The Pittsburgh Steelers made the choice to trade away star wide receiver George Pickens in the 2025 offseason. That decision came after Pittsburgh pulled off a major trade to bring in DK Metcalf, a move that signaled a new direction for the team’s offense. With Metcalf now clearly the number one option in the passing game, the Steelers are counting on his talent and experience to lead a group that looks very different from years past.
Still, trading away Pickens has left the Steelers with serious depth concerns at wide receiver. Outside of Metcalf, the unit lacks proven and consistent options, which has created growing concern about the team’s ability to stretch the field and support their quarterbacks. As a result, several reports have indicated that the Steelers are continuing to explore ways to strengthen their passing attack before the regular season begins.
On Friday, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly shared a big update about one of those potential additions on the Kaboly + Mack podcast. Wide receiver Gabe Davis recently visited Pittsburgh, sparking speculation that he could be the next piece added to the offense. However, Davis left without a deal, and according to Kaboly, the Steelers have likely ended their pursuit. That update suggests the team is shifting its focus elsewhere, but the search for more help at receiver is far from over.
"I don’t think it will be Gabe Davis," Kaboly said. "I just got the feeling when I was there, and people were talking the other day. He just came in for a visit. A complementary visit like a mint on your pillow."
Davis was an intriguing option for the Steelers because he has been a reliable depth wide receiver throughout his five seasons in the NFL.
Known for his size, ability to stretch the field, and knack for making big plays in key moments, Davis could have added much-needed experience and stability to a thin receiver group behind Metcalf.
"Maybe they were just trying to give him the once-over because of that knee," Kaboly said. "I don’t know how aggressive they were in trying to sign him. I think they move on from Gabe Davis. I don’t think we will hear from him again."
However, Davis suffered a knee injury during the 2024 season that clearly affected his performance. His production dipped, and there have been lingering questions about his health and ability to return to form. While his visit to Pittsburgh sparked speculation, it now appears the meeting was more exploratory than anything substantial.
According to Kaboly, the Steelers' interest in Davis was more of a routine check-in rather than a serious effort to bring him aboard. Kaboly believes the team was doing its due diligence but had no real plans to extend an offer. With Davis now seemingly off the table, the Steelers will likely continue searching for a healthier and more immediate contributor to support Metcalf in the passing game.
On Thursday, the Steelers' long-running offseason saga involving 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers finally came to an end. It was revealed that Rodgers planned to sign with Pittsburgh, and he officially did so on Friday. With the signing complete, Rodgers is now the Steelers' starting quarterback for the 2025 season, bringing veteran leadership and a proven track record to a position that has been surrounded by uncertainty.
Rodgers' arrival has led many to believe the Steelers could be eyeing another familiar face. There is growing speculation that he may want to reunite with a pass catcher he has played with before and trusts on the field. Regardless of whether Pittsburgh adds another offensive weapon, Steelers fans are thrilled to finally have clarity at the quarterback position and are hopeful that Rodgers can help elevate the offense to another level.
If the Steelers decide not to bring in another wide receiver, the spotlight will shift to Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson. Both young receivers are expected to compete for the second and third spots behind Metcalf. While they have shown flashes of promise, neither has been tested in a consistent role. The success of the passing game may
