The Pittsburgh Steelers have been defined by their deep-rooted traditions, grit, physical toughness, and unwavering strength for a long time. These core values have shaped the team's identity over the decades, both on and off the field. At the heart of this enduring legacy is strong and resilient leadership, which begins with the head coach. The head coach not only sets the tone for the team’s culture and work ethic, but also embodies the principles that have made the Steelers one of the most respected franchises in the NFL.
Former Steelers nose tackle and defensive lineman Casey Hampton recently appeared on Not Just Football, the podcast hosted by current Steelers star Cameron Heyward. During their conversation, which focused on all things related to the Steelers, Heyward asked Hampton to reflect on his experiences playing under two iconic head coaches—Mike Tomlin and Bill Cowher. When asked to compare the two, Hampton shared his thoughts on the key differences between their coaching styles and leadership approaches.
"With Cowher, it's like, everybody wouldn't go to his office and knock on their door and want to talk to him... Tomlin, I feel like anybody go up in that office and knock on the door and want to talk to him," Hampton responded.
Hampton was a dominant force on the Steelers’ defensive line, known for his strength, consistency, and leadership at the nose tackle position. Nicknamed “Big Snack,” he played 12 seasons with the team and was selected to five Pro Bowls. A two-time Super Bowl champion, Hampton's toughness and dedication embodied the hard-nosed identity of the Steelers franchise. Hampton had the unique opportunity to play and win Super Bowls under two legendary head coaches during his career, spending six seasons with Bill Cowher and another six with Mike Tomlin. This gave him firsthand experience with both coaching styles.
Cowher’s coaching style with the Steelers was defined by intensity, discipline, and a passion for the game. Known for his trademark scowl and energetic sideline demeanor, Cowher emphasized physicality, defense, and a strong running game, embodying the identity of the Steelers' organization. He was a player's coach who earned respect through his toughness and straightforward leadership. Under his leadership, the Steelers consistently remained competitive, making 10 playoff appearances and winning Super Bowl XL in 2006 against the Seattle Seahawks. Cowher’s ability to motivate his team and maintain a high standard of accountability played a significant role in shaping the Steelers' tough, resilient culture.
Tomlin’s coaching style on the other hand, is defined by his strong leadership, confidence, and ability to connect with players on a personal level. Since becoming the head coach in 2007, Tomlin has earned a reputation for his calm yet commanding presence. He emphasizes toughness and team unity, often using motivational talks to inspire players. His ability to maintain a winning culture is shown through his record, he has never had a losing season in his professional head coaching career, a testament to his consistency and effectiveness as a leader.
Leadership is a critical component of success in the NFL, both on and off the field. Strong leadership helps establish a team's culture, maintain discipline, and keep players motivated through a long and tough season. Coaches and veteran players play a huge role in setting expectations, mentoring young teammates, and creating a sense of unity and accountability. Without solid leadership, even the most talented teams can struggle to reach their full potential.
The Steelers are lucky to have leadership that goes beyond their great head coaches. One of the most prominent and respected leaders within the organization is Heyward, who is the co-host of the podcast Hampton appeared on. Whether he's on the field making a crucial play or off the field offering guidance to younger players, Heyward embraces his role as a vocal leader. Heyward consistently rises to the occasion, showing that true leadership doesn't just come from the sidelines, it can be just as, or even more impactful when it comes directly from the players.
