Steelers Great Terry Bradshaw Gives Direct Response To Mike Tomlin Over Quarterback Situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers made bold moves in the 2024 offseason by acquiring two prominent quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Initially, the plan was to start Wilson, but a calf injury sidelined him for the first six games of the regular season. In Wilson’s absence, Fields seized the opportunity and delivered a respectable performance, keeping the Steelers competitive with a 4-2 record. Now that Wilson is healthy, there is a growing belief that he will make his much-anticipated season debut on Sunday night against the New York Jets.

The Steelers' quarterback situation has sparked widespread debate among fans and pundits. Some argue that Fields should continue as the starter, citing his recent play and potential upside to the offense with his legs. Others, feel that Wilson, with his experience and proven track record, is the best fit to win games now. Head Coach Mike Tomlin has remained relatively tight-lipped about the final decision, but has hinted that he’s eager to see what Wilson can bring to the table. As it stands, Wilson appears poised to reclaim his starting role in Week 7.

Steelers legend Terry Bradshaw also weighed in on the matter during an interview with TMZ, offering his honest thoughts on the quarterback dilemma. Bradshaw acknowledged Fields' strong performance. Bradshaw went on to detail that he thinks Fields should remain the starter.

"He's played well enough to keep the job, in my opinion," Bradshaw told TMZ. "I'd hang my hat with the young guy. I'm gonna stay with Fields. I think he's played really good. He's such a great athlete, he can throw, and I think he just fits the team he has right now."

Bradshaw admitted that he’s been really impressed with what he’s seen from Fields. In six games, Fields performed solidly, completing 66.3% of his passes for 1,106 yards, with five touchdowns and just one interception. Bradshaw also praised Fields' ability as a rusher, noting how his dual-threat skills have added another dimension to Pittsburgh’s offense.

Fields has established himself as one of the NFL’s top running quarterbacks, and in Pittsburgh, he demonstrated that ability on critical downs, making big plays with his legs when it mattered most. In addition to his passing stats, Fields added five rushing touchdowns, showing his versatility. Under his leadership, the Steelers went 4-2, keeping the team competitive in a challenging stretch without Wilson.

While Bradshaw’s admiration for Fields is understandable, given his respectable play, the reality is that the Steelers brought in Wilson to lead them to the playoffs. They’ve learned a lot from Fields and likely appreciate his growth, but Tomlin’s curiosity about what the nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion still has to offer is hard to ignore. That’s why it seems likely that Tomlin will hand the reins back to Wilson as he returns to full health.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Might Not Have Everyone On Board With The QB Choice

There have been reports that not everyone in the building is on board with Tomlin's likely decision to go back to Wilson. It’s a tough situation, as Fields has seemingly done a good job in Wilson’s absence. However, Tomlin has made it clear that this decision isn't a reflection on Fields' performance. It’s more about having Wilson and wanting to see what he can do with this offense.

While Bradshaw believes the Steelers should stick with Fields, all indications point to Wilson being the starter in Week 7. Steeler Nation is buzzing with anticipation to see Wilson finally make his regular season debut.
