Steelers' Kyle Allen Takes Subtle Jab At Offense For Previous '7 Shots' Failure

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been trying to figure their new offense out to begin training camp, but that's pretty hard to do when the expected starting quarterback, Russell Wilson, is out due to injury. Because of this, Justin Fields has been leading the first-team offense throughout the first part of training camp. That also means that Kyle Allen has been given the chance to lead the second-team offense, as opposed to playing on scout team like a third-string quarterback usually would. Both have been getting plenty of reps in their usual "seven shots" drill.

After Sunday's practice, Allen made an appearance on the Steelers' Training Camp Wrap-Up Show to talk about how things have gone so far. He was asked about the offense winning seven shots, which led to him joking about what happened during after all the previous losses.

"Thanks, Minkah [Fitzpatrick], for picking out the meal for us... Fried chicken, all the good stuff with it, we're excited for it. I've been eating bad the last couple of days."

It's tradition that the winner of seven shots gets to have some high-end meal for dinner. The defense won the two previous drills, so they got to pick out what they got to eat each of those days. After a 5-2 win, Allen, Fields, and the offense finally get their chance to chow down on some amazing food as opposed to whatever usually gets made for the team, and it sounds like Allen could really use that chicken dinner.

The offense had a rough set of days before Sunday. Fields had five attempts during the first seven shots drill of camp as opposed to the usual four, and he blew that chance. Allen completed both of his attempts for touchdowns, while Fields only completed one. The defense won by a score of 4-3, so it makes sense as to why Allen would be somewhat annoyed that he did not get steak and crabs that night.

On the second day, both Allen and Fields had bad days. The defense won 6-1, with Fields getting the only score of the day for the offense. After those two days, there were all kinds of questions on if Fields could actually lead the Steelers to wins if he had to start. Luckily, they were able to rebound on the third set, and finally secure themselves a quality meal to celebrate their victory.

Steelers Saw Solid Potential Out Of Allen

Even though Allen will go back to scout team once Wilson comes back, he at least was able to prove to the team that he could come in if he's needed in a pinch. While he wanted to have all three of his days in the drill to be good, it's still good to see him win two out of three, especially for the position that the Steelers will have him in throughout the season. He's obviously not the best option, but if it comes down to it, Allen can suit up.

Allen has played for six years in the league among multiple roles, so anything that he does in Pittsburgh will be nothing new to him. He was even the full-time starter for the Carolina Panthers in 2019, and he threw for over 3,300 yards, along with 17 touchdowns to 16 interceptions in his 13 games. If worse comes to worst, the Steelers won't have to sweat too much about their situation.
