Thanks to a preseason injury to quarterback Russell Wilson, former Ohio State star quarterback Justin Fields got the chance to start the season at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He played well, going 4-2 during the first six games of the season - but he didn't play well enough. Although he was 106-of-160 passing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception with another 231 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, the Steelers decided to move on to Wilson.
Not long after the decision was made, Fields' name popped up on the injury report. He's spent the past few weeks dealing with a hamstring injury, but received good news ahead of today's game against the Washington Commanders.
According to Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor, Fields is active and will be the team's backup quarterback for this afternoon's game. "Justin Fields is active and back at No. 2 QB. Mike Williams and Preston Smith are both active," Pryor said in a message on social media.
Ahead of Sunday's game, head coach Mike Tomlin hinted that the Commanders need to be ready to see Justin Fields - at least in a few packages - during the game.
"I would always anticipate seeing that as long as both guys are on our roster," Tomlin said when asked if Fields will play.
The Steelers sit at 6-2 on the season and look like a legitimate contender in the AFC. Meanwhile, the Commanders are off to their best start in decades with Rookie of the Year - and potentially MVP - candidate Jayden Daniels under center.
