The Pittsburgh Steelers have been dealing with crucial injuries since training camp, and it has not gotten much better on a week-to-week basic. However, after a surprisingly healthy prime time game against the New York Giants, the Steelers entered the bye week with high hopes for their core. A couple of guys on Injured Reserve (IR) were expected to come off and make it back to the active roster, while other players with more minor issues were seen as guys that would probably play in Week 10.
One of those IR candidates was Dylan Cook, and it seemed like there would have been a sigh of relief to finally get some offensive line depth back, as that unit has been wrecked the most. Instead, the Steelers had other plans.
With seven days to go on his 21-day practice window, the Steelers opted to cut Cook, as opposed to keeping him around as a backup. With the severe lack of offensive line depth, it seemed like getting a guy like that back would be a welcoming thing, not a reason to cut him outright. The Steelers could still sign him back to the practice squad if he clears waivers, which he likely will.
Clearly, the Steelers are ok with the depth that they currently have. Spencer Anderson has been a key backup for the team, as he has the ability to play all five offensive line positions. With injuries all over the place, they clearly want to keep him around just in case any of the starters go down.
The one spot where Anderson may not have been the primary backup was at left tackle, as Calvin Anderson took a snap at that position when Dan Moore Jr. suffered a minor injury against the Giants. Moore later returned and seems to be a lock to start in Week 10 against the Washington Commanders. Anderson has 10 total offensive snaps at tackle in the 2024 season.
Other Steelers' Roster Move
Ade Ogundeji has been on and off the active roster and the practice squad for the last few weeks. The Steelers announced that they have signed him back to the practice squad, and this time, it seems like he will remain on there. Nick Herbig previously stated that he expects to be back after the bye week. With all four edge rushers finally healthy, Ogundeji will have to wait a while for his next chance to get a helmet.
