The Pittsburgh Steelers made a bold decision in the 2024 offseason to provide Cam Sutton with a second chance. After spending the 2023 season with the Detroit Lions, Sutton found himself in hot water with legal issues, leading to his release. With a warrant out for his arrest, Sutton's failure to turn himself in forced Detroit to cut ties, which opened the door for the Steelers to reunite with a player they knew well. Despite his recent troubles, Pittsburgh saw an opportunity to bolster their cornerback depth by bringing back Sutton, hoping his familiarity with the team would help ease his return.
The Steelers signed Sutton under challenging circumstances. His legal troubles led to Sutton getting handed an eight game suspension from the NFL. Head Coach Mike Tomlin and the front office believed his experience and skills could provide a much-needed boost in a position group that had been lacking in depth. Though Sutton's suspension kept him off the field, his return was highly anticipated, with fans and analysts speculating about how his presence could enhance the Steelers’ secondary.
On Tuesday, Tomlin addressed the media about Sutton's return, expressing confidence in his ability to make an impact. Tomlin highlighted Sutton’s familiarity with the Steelers’ defensive schemes and praised his work ethic, noting that Sutton had been working extra hard during his suspension.
Now back with the team, Sutton has an opportunity to rebuild his career and help the Steelers strengthen their defensive backfield, adding a reliable, experienced option to Pittsburgh’s secondary. Tomlin went on to detail what role Sutton will have in his return to the Steel City.
"You know that’s to be determined, but I think that’s one of the things that makes Cam so interesting and valuable to us," Tomlin said. "He is a utility back. His football intellect and physical capabilities is such that he can play anywhere and he has."
Tomlin acknowledged that Sutton's role hasn’t been fully defined yet, but he believes Sutton's versatility will be a significant asset for the team.
"His last year for us he was an outside corner, he was a nickel, he was a dime," Tomlin said. "He was capable of playing safety at times and allowing Minkah to move around and come down and do other things and that versatility is a major attraction to us."
The impressive performance of rookie undrafted free agent Beanie Bishop Jr. has led to speculation about how Sutton's return might affect Bishop's playing time.
Tomlin emphasized that with Sutton back in the mix, no one's position is guaranteed—not even for Joey Porter Jr. or Donte Jackson.
"I know there’s been a lot of speculation to be quite honest with you about how Cam and Beanie might function," Tomlin said. "It’s really two separate discussions, Cam is capable of playing anywhere in the secondary and so if people need to be concerned about reps or division of labor, I would advise everyone in the secondary to be on notice because Cam is that versatile."
Porter has emerged as a standout performer in the Steelers' secondary, showcasing his skills and solidifying his place on the team. Jackson has also made a significant impact, and together, they are transforming the secondary from a potential liability into a formidable unit.
The return of Sutton will be crucial, as he brings invaluable veteran experience back to the lineup.
Steelers' Mike Tomlin Is Thrilled To Have Cam Sutton Back
Tomlin anticipates that Sutton will play a versatile role, hinting that he could take on responsibilities beyond just the nickel position. With Sutton back, the Steelers’ defense becomes even more formidable, and it will be intriguing to see how he and Bishop rotate on the field.
Additionally, Sutton's integration with Porter and Jackson should provide a dynamic presence if he takes on some outside corner duties. While Tomlin is keeping his plans for Sutton under wraps, his excitement about having Sutton available to contribute to the Steelers is evident.
