The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation has captivated fans all offseason. As they prepared to face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, Russell Wilson was named the starting quarterback. However, leading up to the game, Wilson was limited in practice on Thursday due to a calf injury, raising doubts about his availability.
Just 90 minutes before kickoff, Wilson informed Justin Fields that it was his time, as he couldn’t play. Fields had a solid performance, completing 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards and adding 57 rushing yards on 14 carries. Though Fields wasn’t asked to throw much, he performed well when called upon. While the Steelers’ offense didn’t score any touchdowns, it operated with more confidence under new leadership.
As the Steelers prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Denver Broncos, questions remain about Wilson’s health. Head Coach Mike Tomlin stated that they are preparing as if Fields will start but will continue to monitor Wilson's status to see if he can play.
Tight end Pat Freiermuth joined Gerry Dulac on 102.5 WDVE to discuss the quarterback situation, sharing his thoughts on who he wants to be the starter.
"Whoever can get a W, I'm cool with."
The Steelers have made it clear that they see Wilson as their best option, naming him the starter. Fields only got the nod against the Falcons due to Wilson’s calf injury. If Wilson is sidelined, there isn’t much debate about who will start—it will be Fields simply because he’s the healthiest option.
Reports after the game hinted that Wilson didn’t seem particularly pleased. The upcoming Week 2 matchup against the Broncos holds extra significance for Wilson, as it’s a chance for revenge against the team that blamed him for their failures. Naturally, he’d love the opportunity to start and prove them wrong, but his injury might keep him out.
Freiermuth also weighed in on the quarterback situation, noting that both Wilson and Fields have very similar playing styles.
"I think they're similar. They kind of play the game the same way. Obviously, Russ is a little older, but he still has some wheels on him. No one's gonna beat Justin in a race. He's a hell of an athlete. But I think they're very similar with the way they think about the game, play the game, what they see."
The Steelers find themselves in a strong position, believing they have two capable starting quarterbacks. Wilson has been nursing a calf injury throughout training camp, and its recurrence is concerning. However, Fields benefited from Wilson’s absence, gaining valuable reps and extra opportunities to work with the starters.
Steelers' Justin Fields Likely To Get Another Big Opportunity Against Denver
Against the Falcons, Fields seemed somewhat limited by Arthur Smith's game plan, as he wasn’t asked to throw much. Despite not having the chance to establish a rhythm, Fields still made big plays, showing impressive poise. His chemistry with George Pickens stood out, connecting on six receptions for 85 yards.
If Fields starts again against the Broncos, it will be another key opportunity for him to prove he deserves the starting role. The Steelers' quarterback situation is becoming increasingly intriguing, and it’ll be interesting to see how things unfold once Wilson returns to full health.
