Steelers Punter Cameron Johnston Updates Injury Status

Steelers punter Cameron Johnston showed progress on Thursday as he is recovering from a knee injury suffered in 2024.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were fortunate to have serviceable punting last season thanks to Corliss Waitman after years of inconsistency. However, his opportunity came at the misfortune of the 2024 free agent acquisition of Cameron Johnston. On Thursday Johnston provided an update on rehab progress.

Johnston is now able to start running after suffering a gruesome injury in week one against the Atlanta Falcons. Leg injuries can sometimes be career-ending for punters and place kickers. Johnston punted very well in the preseason and was off to a good start in Atlanta–punting twice for 103 yards.

The injury was particularly highlighted by Tomlin in the postgame press conference as he stated, “It’s a shame for him. This guy has been spectacular through team development. He’s an absolute stud not only in his talents but his approach to business. My heart goes out to him.”

It remains to be seen how Johnston will recover and, among other aspects, if he will be back in Pittsburgh next season. He spent the previous six seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Houston Texans.

Waitman had a productive season overall with 27 of his 65 punts pinning opponents inside their own 20-yard line in relief of Johnston.
