According to Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II, he believes the signs are pointing in the direction of Aaron Rodgers signing with the club in the near term.
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Rooney has a good feeling about landing the former Green Bay Packers star and Super Bowl champion. Dulac posted Rooney said the signs are "pointing that direction" of him signing with the Steelers.
"We keep hearing that he's headed in our direction," Rooney said Tuesday morning at the NFL owners meetings at The Breakers resort. "I'd say we feel pretty good about it at this time."
That's an announcement update as Rodgers rumors are rampant.
Rooney did say the Steelers would not wait "forever" for Rodgers to make a decision to accept the terms of the deal, but the team would wait "a little longer" to see if Rodgers will accept the one-year proposal.
"I didn't envision it taking this long," Rooney said.
Rooney was not in town when Rodgers visited in Steelers late last month. However, he did speak with him by telephone and the call went well.
"We talked about Pittsburgh and all the Pittsburgh coaches he's had over the years," Rooney said. "And we've talked about Greenfield, and how much he knows about Greenfield [from former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, a Greenfield native]. And so we had a good conversation."
ESPN's Brooke Pryor said there were "positive signs" regarding Rodgers and the Steelers reaching an accord.
One of the positive signs was Rodgers contacting newly-acquired Steelers' wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. The two got together and Metcalf ran some routes with Rodgers throwing to the receiver.
