Steelers' top receiver upgrade at risk as Saints try to swoop in for the steal

Aaron Rodgers continues to dominate the headlines for the Pittsburgh Steelers since he signed, but everyone is wondering what could be next. With several free agents still on the board, many hope that General Manager Omar Khan will locate an upgrade at the receiver position. Many thought it might have happened when Gabe Davis visited the team, but a contract failed to materialize.

Steelers' top receiver upgrade at risk as Saints try to swoop in for the steal

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Davis is on the move to his next stop.

"Former Jaguars WR Gabe Davis is on his way to visit the Saints, a potential offensive addition for New Orleans. Davis also recently visited the Steelers. With plenty of money coming from Jax (Jacksonville), Davis would command just a 1-year deal from his new team."

New Orleans is just the next stop on Davis' free agency tour. Other than the Steelers and the Saints, the receiver has officially visited the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants. After a tumultuous year in Jacksonville, his status in the NFL sank. Pittsburgh wants an upgrade like Davis, but the concerns surrounding his injury from last season might continue to scare teams away.

Davis is known for being a playmaker during his time with the Buffalo Bills. He became a reliable deep threat for Josh Allen, but his decision to sign with the Jaguars as a free agent last year was detrimental to his career. He is searching for a perfect rebound opportunity, and his health concerns might become a monumental issue for his professional career moving forward.

Pittsburgh Steelers could lose top free agent target Gabe Davis to the Saints

The Saints will be hosting the former star receiver on a visit, but questions about his recovery persist.

It's not common for a free agent to tour four teams without landing a contract. If he fails to sign with New Orleans, it will speak volumes about where he is in terms of rehabbing his injury from last season. He tore his meniscus on November 10, 2024.

That injury has a lengthy recovery process. Suffering that injury late last season has only complicated matters for Davis. He failed a physical with the Jaguars, which caused the team to let him go. The status of his knee injury has become a red flag for each club he has visited. Otherwise, he would've found a cheap one-year contract by now. The Steelers have interest, but there are worries.

New Orleans has as many problems at the receiver position as Pittsburgh. They are desperate for a cheap fix to their roster. They have plenty of problems across their roster, but adding Davis could help calm some issues. If his health checks out during his visit with the Saints, it wouldn't surprise anyone to see him sign. It would be another potential upgrade to cross off the list for the Steelers.

He should return to the field by the start of the regular season, but he will be playing catchup.

Davis remains a free agent, and his failure to land a contract through three free-agent visits is alarming. His knee injury doesn't appear to be close to full health. It might result in him waiting around for a while. It could drag into the regular season if no team is comfortable with his status. Pittsburgh will keep Davis in the back of their mind, but they might lose him to the Saints.
