If the Pittsburgh Steelers are serious about bringing a veteran quarterback to town for next season, a situation may have just presented itself.
The Pittsburgh Steelers desperately need a quarterback. The LA Rams have one that they might not want anymore. Could a deal be worked out to bring Matthew Stafford to Pittsburgh?
At this point, anything could happen as it's likely the Steelers move on from both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson this offseason and, for the second year in a row, turn over their entire quarterback room.
This is all based on the fact that the Rams have now granted Stafford permission to seek a potential trade, as Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported on the Rich Eisen Show on Friday.
Now, just because Stafford can go tampering legally doesn't mean a trade will be done. It seems unlikely he'll garner the type of interest from a team willing to give up what the Rams would want back in return. But he's free to try.
If the Steelers are serious about bringing in a veteran quarterback, the combination of Stafford's availability and the Steelers' potential to be aggressive this offseason could be a match made in heaven.
One media outlet proposed a trade to the Browns that included Stafford and a 2025 third-round pick (No. 90 overall) to Cleveland in exchange for the Browns' 2026 first-round pick and 2025 third-round pick.
If the Steelers could come up with something better or similar, it's entirely possible this thing could get done, based on the hypothetical nature of that trade. It would allow the Steelers to have their veteran presence now and still have the draft capital to bring in a young signal caller to sit behind Stafford.
Last season, Stafford appeared in 16 games and completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Those numbers would look immense from someone in a Browns uniform.
How would Stafford look in a Steelers uniform? We may never know.
