With both DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin lll solidifying themselves as Aaron Rodgers' top two targets entering training camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team is now expected to pursue another veteran receiver in hopes of bolstering the their depth. Metcalf, who was acquired by the Steelers in a deal with the Seattle Seahawks earlier in the offseason, is expected to play a massive role in Pittsburgh's offense and is the clear number one receiving option on the team. Austin, who finds himself entering the final year of his rookie deal, has reportedly shown major signs of improvement throughout the offseason and was recently named the team's wide receiver two (WR2) by Wide Receivers Coach Zach Azzanni.
As speculation surrounding a potential extension with the young receiver from Memphis continues to circulate throughout social media, Steelers insider and correspondent for The Pat McAfee Show, Mark Kaboly shared his thoughts on the situation.
"I would probably really, really think about it," Kaboly stated. "Because, you talk about TJ Watt getting done cheaper. You get [Austin] done in August, September, he is going to be a bargain."
Kaboly then went on to speak about what may happen if the Steelers choose to wait on an Austin extension, as a big season this year for the young star may result in a much larger contract offer later.
"If he goes out and has a pretty good year, which it could be, then he's going to get paid in the offseason," Kaboly explained. "I would really contemplate that. A lot would have to do with what he looks like in training camp and into the preseason. But I would really give that a thought."
Originally a walk-on at Memphis, Austin is a fast and elusive receiver who has shown signs of improvement throughout every stage of his young career. Austin is expected to shine as the Steelers' WR2 this season, but there are many who are still skeptical as they see him as unproven. There's no doubt that as the offseason progresses and especially into training camp, we will see Austin continue to split time and battle with the likes of second-year receiver Roman Wilson, and the newly acquired veteran in Robert Woods.
Regardless, the former Tiger will almost certainly see an increase in targets from last year. Pittsburgh may be wise to offer Austin an extension sooner rather than later, as the rising star will almost certainly warrant more money next offseason.
With Metcalf establishing himself as the team's clear cut WR1, Austin finds himself in perfect position to have a breakout year. Austin should be a major beneficiary of Rodgers' presence as well, as the former Jet is expected to further develop his relationship with the wide receiver room throughout training camp. While Austin continues to shine and solidify himself as a top option, an official decision on the depth chart is not expected to be made prior to the conclusion of training camp.
Steelers Aren't Done Pursuing Talent On The Offensive Side Of The Ball
Steelers General Manger Omar Khan has made it clear that despite Austin's growth, the team is still looking to bolster the offense for the upcoming season. Whether it's at wide receiver, or even tight end, expect another potential acquisition to take place for Pittsburgh ahead of training camp late next month.
With the arrival of Rodgers in the Steel City, this is Pittsburgh's shot to continue to load up and compete for another title.
As Austin prepares to enter the most important season of his young NFL career himself, the former Tiger continues to emerge as an elite option behind Metcalf overall. Fans should continue to monitor Austin's contract situation closely.
