The Pittsburgh Steelers are again at a crossroads at quarterback, with the one-yeart rentals of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields expiring.
A solution? Trade? Free agency? The NFL Draft?
How about throwing every idea into one messy mountain and filling a TV segment?
That's what FS1's Colin Cowherd is doing here with a blockbuster proposal that would turn the NFL upside down.
His latest take: The Steelers should trade two star players, linebacker T.J. Watt and receiver George Pickens, along with two first-round picks, to acquire Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft.
“The Steelers have been putting band-aids on (at QB) for six years,” Cowherd said on The Herd. “I think they have to rip it off ... I would trade T.J. Watt, George Pickens, two first-round picks if your scouting department said Shedeur Sanders is the guy.
"I think Cam Ward is going to go No. 1. I think Shedeur Sanders, you could get at No. 5, 6, or 7.”
As always with these media urgings, the devil is in the details.
We're not sure who Colin thinks will be the Steelers trade partner here.
We're not sure Colin cares about the cap ramifications (Pittsburgh would eat $11 million here.)
We're not sure Colin knows that both Watt and Pickens are in the final years of their deals, so their new team would be taking on two players who are rentals themselves.
Sanders, under the guidance of his father, Deion Sanders, is a 6-2 215-pound top prospect. But this proposal gives up an awful lot of talent to find a QB ... including the two first-picks, which might enough ammo for the Steelers to take a stab without sacrificing two of their most impactful players.
