Steelers WR George Pickens Talks New-Look QB Room

Pittsburgh Steelers WR George Pickens talks about the new additions of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to the QB room.

PITTSBURGH — George Pickens is coming into his third year with the weight of the wide receiver room on his shoulders. In the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, Pickens is the only proven commodity who can produce and is the unchallenged top wide receiver on the roster. He has to work with two new quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

Pickens knows a bit about Fields, but before his trade to Pittsburgh, he had not seen him in four or five years. And as for Wilson, there was not much connection there. In fact, Pickens stated outright that he found out about the moves at the same time that everyone else did.

George Pickens has already taken to the new quarterbacks well. He starts to culture chemistry with both quarterbacks throughout the first week of OTAs. But even more than building chemistry with those new quarterbacks and plenty of different receivers after Diontae Johnson’s departure, Pickens started working to expand his game this offseason.

His focus? To become a three-level threat, teams have to care about downfield and the quick game. Pickens took the step in 2023 as a route runner to separate at times, specifically on those deep and intermediate routes, but he has not put it all together just yet. Now, polishing off the end of games, Pickens hopes to go from star to superstar as the bonafide top receiver in the Steelers wide receiver room.
