Stephen Curry drops hint on Boston Celtics free agent signing

The Celtics have already lost three rotation players this summer and they’re expected to lose a fourth in the coming days. It’s just unclear when exactly Al Horford will leave the C’s and ultimately what his decision will be for his NBA future.

Horford has been heavily linked to the Warriors on the open market as Golden State star Stephen Curry also hinted as much recently. Per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Curry sounds optimistic about Horford joining the Warriors for next season.

“He’s a champion, great player,” Curry said. “When…if, when all that stuff happens, I’ll talk about it.”

Horford, 39, entered an uncertain summer as an unrestricted free agency as there were also reports that he also considered retirement. The Celtics were clear in that they wanted him back, but the Warriors appear to be his likely landing spot. C’s president Brad Stevens noted earlier this week it was “unlikely” the big man would be back with the team.

There appeared a solid chance throughout last season that Horford would continue playing for the Celtics as he inched toward retirement. But Jayson Tatum’s ruptured Achilles tendon changed the equation for the franchise for the 2025-26 season. The Celtics are in retooling mode, and considering Horford’s age, it’s likely he wants to play for a contender this upcoming season.

Despite the rumors, Horford has yet to officially sign with the Warriors as a few other teams were also listed as possibilities. Golden State is dealing with its own negotiations, including with restricted free agency Jonathan Kuminga. But the Horford signing appears imminent as the big man will look to compete with the Warriors next season.
