In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender about The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 finale, chief content officer Scott Gimple explained Glenn's return has been considered. The franchise creative explained how, while the idea for his return exists, the logistics wouldn't be easy to bring about due to Yeun's busy schedule. While it could still happen in the future, it's not a guarantee. Check out what Gimple had to say below:
ScreenRant: Maggie relives the death of her husband when Negan kills Bruegel. Were there any talks to get Steven Yeun back as Glenn in the finale for a vision or flashback connected to Maggie’s current storyline? I know Logan Kim has said he’d love to interact with Hershel’s dad in a dream too.
Scott Gimple: I think it comes to mind all the time. In some ways, it's a pretty obvious way to go. But it would obviously be enjoyable for all of us. Steven is a remarkably busy dude, though - not to say that these folks aren't. You never know, I guess I'd say, but we never went that far with it.
Glenn's death has continued to be the reason Maggie and Negan have such a rift between them, despite the latter's attempts to make amends through reformation. The end of Dead City season 2 saw Maggie channel that energy in an attempt to finally kill him. However, upon learning he'd been taking care of Ginny, who, tragically, became a zombie, she spared him and tried to save his life. While this doesn't excuse him killing her husband, it does signify her willingness to work with him against a common enemy.
Based on Gimple's statement, it doesn't seem like Glenn's return will happen anytime soon. While the setup for Dead City season 3 would be perfect for a flashback or ghostly appearance from Yeun's character, the actor has his own busy schedule. This includes providing voice work for Invincible season 4 and The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, while also filming for the Ben Affleck-led crime thriller Animals. Because of how many projects he's attached to, it seems unlikely he'll return to The Walking Dead anytime in the near future.
Yeun's next release is the action thriller movie The Rip, releasing January 16, 2026 on Netflix.
Although Gimple isn't sure if Glenn will cameo in the franchise's future, The Walking Dead: Dead City would be the perfect place for it to happen. Now that Maggie and Negan are going to be forced to work together to save Hershel (Logan Kim) and escape Manhattan, it would be the perfect time for a flashback involving the deceased character. With Yeun attached to so many projects right now, though, it could be some time until he returns should he decide to make an appearance.
