Terry McLaurin ready to escalate as Commanders go silent on deal

Terry McLaurin's appearance in front of the media didn't raise urgency within the Washington Commanders regarding his new deal.

Adam Peters is still working — signing edge rusher Von Miller and tying down cornerback Trey Amos to his second-round rookie contract is proof of that. However, the wide receiver's plea for an extension has fallen on deaf ears so far.

And according to one NFL insider, McLaurin is not ruling out anything in pursuit of getting the deal he deserves.

Harry McKenna from FOX Sports, citing someone close to McLaurin, revealed that the former third-round pick out of Ohio State has everything on the table. This includes holding out or in at training camp, which begins later this week. Perhaps more concerningly, a possible trade request hasn't been completely dismissed either.

But the biggest thing above all else is to ensure the relationship between McLaurin and the Commanders doesn't go beyond breaking point.

"[Terry] McLaurin, an All-Pro receiver and team captain, is most interested in "trying to bring a deal together, not breaking the team apart," according to a source close to McLaurin. If necessary, McLaurin will explore every option, including a holdout, a hold-in and a trade request, per the source. "Everything will be on the table," the source told me. But McLaurin is taking things day-by-day in hopes of hearing more from the Commanders, who have not talked to him about his contract in weeks — even after he spoke out about his dissatisfaction."

The fact that McLaurin is still concerned about his relationship with the organization is a testament to his high character. Nobody should have expected anything less, which makes his treatment up to now all the more disappointing.

Adam Peters wants to get a deal done with McLaurin. He'll probably confirm exactly that during his media availability on Tuesday, but the general manager is pretty dug in regarding the money or the extension's length. And it is far apart from what the pass-catcher and his representatives want.

Tensions are simmering to a boiling point. McLaurin made that pretty clear, so don't be surprised if the wideout takes additional measures to turn up the heat.

Not extending McLaurin sends the wrong message. Peters is doing what he believes is right for the franchise, and he's earned plenty of trust up to this point. Even so, it won't take long for the fans to turn if common ground isn't reached with one of the team's most beloved players on and off the field.

The clock is ticking, and there's just no telling how things will go from here.
