The Buccaneers Could Definitely Use the Services of Harold Landry

Buccaneers fans, I don’t quite remember the last time there seemed to be a more obvious Jason Licht move than this. Harold Landry is not exactly Myles Garrett, but he isn’t a slouch either. His current contract is not reflective of his true value.

This is a bad thing. The Titans made a bad move with his contract (shocking I know that they made a bad move) and overpaid him, part of the reason they want to move on from him. While his last two years are not guaranteed, it is still $17.5 million for the next two years. However, that may not matter. Please allow me to explain.

The thesis for this article came about because the Titans announced they would allow him to look for a trade. But his contract is so terrible that most NFL teams won’t be tempted. So the Titans would likely be forced to cut him instead. Maybe if Mike Vrabel wants him badly enough he might trade for him, but I can’t imagine he would want to give up even a fourth or a fifth when the team is nowhere near competing (at least on the surface). Two people whose opinion I respect when talking about the Bucs and football in general seem to think he will be a cut candidate.

Via Pewter Report’s Joshua Queipo,

“The sack numbers are flashy, but with $17.5M cashflows in each of the next two years I’m not sure there will be a ton of suitors in the trade market.

His 2024 production is very similar to DJ Wonnum’s 2023. Wonnum signed for $6.25M/year.”

If he were able to make it to FA, the Bucs will be in the market for him. He won’t be commanding too much, but I think in the right circumstances, he can produce. He still had nine sacks last year and played all 17 games. I think he also has more in the tank at 28 despite suffering a major knee injury unlike say a guy like Shaq Barrett. The big thing is if he wants a multi-year deal. If he were willing to settle for a little bit less, than I think he would settle for Tampa. Though 28 is relatively young for an OLB he may feel father time creeping up. He hasn’t won much since entering the league since his team sucks. So, if he’s more motivated by winning than getting money, the Bucs make more sense than the Patriots. And he can develop a guy the Buccaneers end up drafting (likely in the first or second).
