During the Liam Coen introductory press conference, the new head coach emphasized the influence of Matt LaFleur, among others in the Sean McVay coaching tree, on his development as a coach.
Given this context, it’s no surprise that Coen has hired a coach from LaFleur’s staff, who played a role in the resurgence of the Packers' defense in 2024.
With over 19 years of coaching experience and at just 42 years old, Anthony Campanile has been named the new defensive coordinator for the Jaguars, as announced by the team on Thursday.
Under head coach LaFleur and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Campanile recently served as the linebackers coach and defensive run-game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
During his tenure, the Packers reached the NFC Wild Card round with an 11-6 record, ranking sixth in points allowed and fifth in total yards allowed.
Campanile's departure will be a significant loss for the Green Bay Packers. In a recent article for ESPN Lacrosse, both the head coach and defensive coordinator praised Campanile’s strengths.“I think Campanile does a hell of a job with that whole room…those guys have all gotten better throughout the course of the season….it’s because of the consistent coaching that Campanile does,” said Matt LaFleur
“I have a huge amount of respect for him as a coach…his knowledge, how hard he coaches, his intensity, but more importantly as a person. He’s an extremely loyal friend, he always has been. He’s a guy that no matter where I’ve been, if I picked up the phone and needed anything I know he’d be right there,” said Jeff Hafley.
We will observe how Liam Coen continues to build his Jaguars coaching staff in the coming weeks. There are definitely reasons to be excited about the changes so far.
