While many viewers thought the scene made for a sweet moment, others were not thrilled. The line inspired endless memes spoofing the phrase, perhaps becoming the most recognizable quote of the show's second season. With so much attention being given to the line, series co-creator Craig Mazin has now weighed in. Per SkyIreland on TikTok, Mazin said that the quote, which was not featured in the scene in the video game that it's based on, just "felt right" to include based on how excited Ramsey was to say it once it was pitched.
"Bella and I were talking about that episode, and, I like to run things past [the actors] all the time," Mazin said of the line, hinting that he first got Ramsey's approval before adding it in. "I was like, 'This just popped into my head.' I don't know why. It just felt right. It's not an expression of even gender, as much as just state of mind. Bella was like, 'Oh, oh, oh, oh, I have to!'"

Mazin continued, "Sometimes, to have somebody say, 'Oh, I don't mind doing that,' [isn't good enough]. You're looking for them to say, 'Oh, no, I must! Yes! Please, let me do that!' The joy that just burbles out of Bella when they say, 'I'm going to be a dad!' It's wonderful."
Kaitlyn Dever's Abby Will Be the Primary Character in Season 3
Some online may have had fun with the quote, but it's still not the most controversial moment to come out of Season 2 of The Last of Us. Many viewers were not happy to see Pedro Pascal's Joel meeting his fate so soon into the new season, even if it was directly inspired by the events of the original video games. For better or for worse, Season 3 will also be putting Joel's killer, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), into the spotlight, essentially serving as her story.
The first two seasons of The Last of Us are streaming on Max. Season 3 does not have a premiere date set at this time.
