At a recent panel discussion, 'Last of Us' creator confirmed a long-running fan theory for the show's upcoming third season.
Just as had been the case for Season 1, The Last of Us' second season has sent shock waves resonating throughout mainstream pop culture. With viewers still buzzing about the unexpected events of Season 2, many are currently wondering what the future holds for HBO's premiere post-apocalyptic survival series, including the fates of Ellie, Abby and many of their fellow survivors.
While speculation continue to set the Internet ablaze, more recently, The Last of Us' co-creator has officially confirmed a long-running fan theory regarding Season 3.
At a recent speaking event promoting the series, showrunner Neil Druckmann definitely said that The Last of Us' third season will focus on Kaitlyn Dever's Second 2 antagonist, Abby. As a result, the creative direction of the show will switch gears from focusing on Ellie and her adoptive father Joel, exploring Abby's journeys in the larger world of The Last of Us.
At an FYC panel this past Monday, Druckmann specifically cited the creative liberties granted to the showrunners by HBO, allowing them to restructure the series around the apparent antagonist, Abby.
“I can’t believe that they let us structure the series in this way, meaning like, we just ended Season 2, and Season 3 is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn," Druckmann said at the event.
The new change in The Last of Us' direction comes after weeks of rumors hinting that Abby would become the new main character of Season 3.
As surprising as this development might be for some viewers, dedicated gaming fans will recognize that The Last of Us Part II -- which provides the inspiration for the HBO series' second and third season -- features Abby as one of two playable main characters in the game, tracking her redemptive story arc from Joel's vengeful killer into a more sympathetic anti-hero.
