On June 5, the adult animated sitcom scored 470 points, as compared to The Last of Us' 456 points. The apocalyptic drama has earned a total of over 27,000 points this year, while the evergreen Rick and Morty has earned a total of over 3,600 points. The third spot on HBO's viewership charts was claimed by the Sex and the City spin-off series And Just Like That, which recently returned for a third season. During the course of its run, Rick and Morty has developed a strong cult following, but has also been at the center of controversy.
The show's co-creator, Justin Roiland, was fired in 2023 after being accused of domestic violence. Although he hadn't served as showrunner since Season 3, he was also replaced as the voice actor behind both titular characters by Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden, respectively. Since Roiland's departure, Rick and Morty has had to survive the speed bump of Season 7, which scored a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. The new season, however, holds a perfect 100% score. In her review of the eighth season, Collider's Jasneet Singh wrote, "Despite this slight tonal shift, Rick and Morty Season 8 can only really be described as consistent. It hasn't brought anything new to the table thus far, but also cannot be faulted for the quality of stories, humor, and emotion it delivers."
'The Last of Us' Was Review-Bombed
The second season of The Last of Us, on the other hand, was made a victim of review-bombing. This is when a group of viewers makes a concerted effort to manipulate a film or show's scores on an aggregator platform. The Last of Us Season 2's audience score on Rotten Tomatoes was in a free-fall for the entirety of its run, ultimately dropping to a shockingly low 37%, which is where the score currently sits. You can watch both shows on Max, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
