The Last of Us Season 2 Casts Emmy-Winning Comedian In Mystery Role

As filming gets underway on the new episodes, The Last of Us season 2 has added another cast member. Based on the Naughty Dog video games of the same name, the HBO show quickly became a hit with its 2023 debut, with original creator/director Neil Druckmann and Emmy winner Craig Mazin developing the season 2 scripts even before its renewal.

TheWrap has now brought word that Catherine O'Hara has joined the Last of Us season 2 cast. The Emmy winner, best known for her roles in the original Home Alone movies, Beetlejuice and Schitt's Creek, has signed on to star in the HBO show in an undisclosed mystery role. She joins the recently announced Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jesse and Isabela Merced as Dina, all key characters from Part II.

Who O'Hara Could Be Playing In The Last Of Us Season 2

With The Last of Us season 2 expected to adapt the events of Part II, focus has been on which key characters from the sequel game would appear in the show. The two most vital additions have already been set with Dever's Abby and Merced's Dina, while Mazino's Jesse was also a welcome casting for those familiar with the source material. As many characters from the second game remain uncast, there are a few options for O'Hara to play in the season.

One potential part O'Hara could portray in season 2 is Yara, the sister of former Seraphites member Lev and an ally of Abby. The issue with this, however, would be a changing of the Asian-American heritage for both characters in the game, something that has already sparked division in regard to Merced's Dina casting, as some took issue with a Latinx performer playing a character of Jewish/Israeli heritage. Another option would be former Firefly member Mel, another close friend of Abby and witness to Joel's assault in his quest to save Ellie from being sacrificed to find a Cordyceps cure.

Along with them, there is also the possibility that O'Hara could play a new character created specifically for The Last of Us season 2. Season 1 saw the introduction of some original characters, including Melanie Lynskey's Kathleen, Jeffrey Pierce's Perry, Graham Greene's Marlon and Elaine Miles' Florence, among others. Regardless of who she ends up playing, O'Hara's casting for the new season marks a promising continuation of the show's talent in front of the screen.
