The Last of Us' Season 2, Episode 6: The HBO Series' Penultimate Episode Is Coming—Here's How to Watch It

We’re almost at the end of The Last of Us Season 2, and it looks like we may finally be getting some answers to the questions we’ve all been asking. While the series’ last two episodes have mainly centered on Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina’s (Isabela Merced) harrowing trip to Seattle, and opening up space for what their future relationship may look like (provided they both make it out of their alive), we have not forgotten Joel (Pedro Pascal)—the reason the two of them made the dangerous trek to Washington in the first place.

There’s still a lot that could or could not happen in the next two episodes: Will Ellie finally track down Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), and what will she do if and when she does find her? Where do Ellie and Dina go from here? What might have changed in Jackson by the time they get back?

But based on the press photos released for Sunday’s episodes, we have some pretty strong clues about a couple of plot lines. Let’s take a look at what we know about The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 6.

What is the Release Date for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 6?

As in previous weeks, HBO isn’t making the titles of new episodes available until after they air. Though we don’t know the title of The Last of Us Season 2, Season 6, we do know that the episode—which is the season’s penultimate—will arrive on Max on Sunday, May 18, 2025. New episodes premiere in the same time slot each Sunday, and the Season 2 finale is set to air next week, on May 25, 2025, over Memorial Day weekend.

What Time Does The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 6 Drop?

HBO series that also stream on Max usually arrive at the same time the show airs live versus midnight or some other, arbitrary time (as some other streaming networks do). The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 6 will begin streaming on Max at 9 p.m. EST and 6 p.m. PST—the coveted Sunday night slot that has long been reserved for HBO’s biggest hits, including (most recently) The White Lotus and (previously) The Sopranos and Game of Thrones.

What is the Plot of The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 6?

As usual, the creators of The Last of Us like to keep as much of the show as they can a secret. But they do love to tease us, which is exactly what they’ve done with the upcoming episode. Both via the press photos and a previously released trailer for the episode, we know that The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 6 will be told largely in flashbacks, meaning viewers will get to see Joel and Ellie reunited, and in happier times. We’ll also venture a guess—again, based on the trailer—that we’ll learn more about whatever it was that caused the two of them to fall out.

Neither the press images nor the trailer feature Dina or Jesse (Young Manzino), though we do see images of Gail (Catherine O’Hara) and Joe Pantoliano, who we know was cast as Gail’s now-deceased (at the hands of Joel) husband Eugene. Meaning that the episode seems poised to tell us more about what happened between when and where we left Joel and Ellie at the end of Season 1 and when we were first reacquainted with them a few years into their new life in Jackson.
