The Last of Us Season 2 First Images Reveal Joel & Ellie Before Everything Goes Wrong

HBO reveals a first look at The Last of Us season 2. Following an incredibly well-received first season last year, the video game adaptation will return in 2025 and begin telling the story laid out in Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II. Craig Mazin returns as showrunner for the sophomore outing, with Pedro Pascal reprising his role as Joel and Bella Ramsey returning as his companion, Ellie. The Last of Us season 2 began filming earlier this year in British Columbia, with production set to conclude this summer.

As part of Wednesday's upfronts presentation, HBO shares new images from The Last of Us season 2. While the images don't reveal too much, they do serve as the first official look at Pascal's Joel and Ramsey's Ellie in the new season. Check out the images below:

The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Feature Some Changes For Joel & Ellie

Season 2's Cast Features Some Exciting Additions

The Last of Us' season 1 finale features Joel essentially wiping out an entire hospital full of Fireflies in an effort to save Ellie. While Ellie's immunity from the Cordyceps infection could potentially have led to a cure, the procedure would have cost Ellie her life, and Joel wasn't willing to lose her. The final moments of the season also see Joel lie to Ellie about all of this, setting up a great deal of conflict for the two characters ahead when the truth inevitably comes to light.

In addition to a conflict between Joel and Ellie, The Last of Us' cast is set to grow larger in the new season as more characters come into their orbit. Some important newcomers include Isabela Merced as Dina, a love interest for Ellie, and Young Mazino as Jesse. Both ultimately become crucial allies for Ellie as her story unfolds. The only time Ellie's love life was explored in season 1 was through a flashback episode, so season 2 could see Ramsey's character's romantic life come more to the forefront.

Another new character in The Last of Us season 2 is Abby, who will be played by Kaitlyn Dever. Without delving too far into spoilers from the Naughty Dog video game sequel, Abby, unlike some of the antagonists in season 1, could serve as a major villain to both Ellie and Joel across multiple episodes. Many questions still remain about The Last of Us season 2, but the latest images are hopefully enough to tide audiences over until an official trailer is released.
