The Last Of Us Season 2's Kaitlyn Dever Tease Confirms A Major Aspect Of Abby's Story
The familiar opening shot of the newest trailer for The Last of Us season 2 confirms that the show is leaning into a major component of Abby’s story even earlier than the game. The new trailer for The Last of Us season 2 has confirmed that the series will return to HBO’s airwaves in April, and it’ll begin adapting the massive nonlinear storyline of The Last of Us Part II. It’s wasting no time getting into the action, as it introduces Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby in its first moments.
In The Last of Us Part II, Joel is brutally murdered by Abby, setting Ellie on a cross-country quest for revenge. Abby and her motive remain a mystery while the player follows Ellie’s relentless journey to find her in Seattle and make her pay. It’s not until she’s slaughtered all of Abby’s friends that the player finally gets to see Abby’s side of the story. But the new trailer for season 2 suggests that the TV show will move up the explanation of Abby’s motive to make her more sympathetic from the beginning.
The Last Of Us Season 2's New Trailer Teases Abby's Hospital Corridor Scene
Kaitlyn Dever's Abby Is First Seen At The Fireflies' Hospital
The latest trailer for The Last of Us season 2 opens with Abby cautiously walking down a corridor at the Fireflies’ hospital. There’s even a closeup shot of her Firefly tags to ensure that viewers know where she is and who she’s affiliated with. This scene makes it clear to TV audiences that Abby is a Firefly who was present during Joel’s notorious massacre at the end of The Last of Us season 1.
In the game, players don’t find out that Abby is a Firefly who killed Joel to avenge her dad (the same motivation as Ellie) until after Ellie’s journey through Seattle is complete.
This sequence is a shot-for-shot remake of a sequence from the game, where Abby finds her father Jerry — the surgeon who was planning to operate on Ellie — after he’s been killed by Joel. In the game, players don’t find out that Abby is a Firefly who killed Joel to avenge her dad (the same motivation as Ellie) until after Ellie’s journey through Seattle is complete. The trailer suggests that the TV show is moving it up much earlier to make Abby sympathetic from the get-go.
How The Hospital Sequence Kicks Off Abby's Story In The Last Of Us Season 2
It Sets Her Off On The Path To Revenge

For years, she won’t rest until she can track down Joel and kill him as eye-for-an-eye punishment for killing her dad. She becomes so focused on exacting revenge that it starts to impact her relationship with the love of her life, Owen, driving him into the arms of another woman. Abby’s entire arc can be traced back to that crucial moment at the hospital.
