Season 2 of The Last of Us Will Adapt the Sequel Video Game

Season 2 will adapt the beloved video game's controversial but GOTY-winning sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which follows Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as she embarks on a quest for revenge against Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) for dealing her a great loss, only to get caught up in a war between dueling factions for post-apocalyptic Seattle. Along with Dever, HBO confirmed several actors over the past year to play Part II's cast in live-action, ranging from Isabela Merced as Ellie's girlfriend, Dina, to a returning Jeffrey Wright as WLF militia leader Isaac.

Though season 2's trailers featured key scenes from the 2020 game, Part II director and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann revealed that its narrative would follow season 1's structure for adapting Part II in a manner that best serves a TV format.

Our goal is to tell the best story possible.

"The way we approach it, we start at the beginning of the season, and we break the season, and we look at the game. Our goal is to tell the best story possible," he said in a recent interview, explaining how "our process is to just look at the content we have in the game and say, 'OK, what are things that we both just overwhelmingly love and feel could be adapted as is?' And we just put little check marks by those index cards to say, 'OK, those things could just stay as is,' and that becomes building blocks."

Since The Last of Us premiered, other big studios have released live-action game adaptations of varying qualities, ranging from Prime Video's acclaimed Fallout series to the critically panned Borderlands movie. Upcoming game adaptations in 2025 include A Minecraft MovieMortal Kombat 2, and Five Nights at Freddy's 2, as well as Netflix animated series like Devil May Cry and the new season of Castlevania: Nocturne.
