'The Last of Us’ Star Isabela Merced Drops Surprising New Details About the “Vibe” of Her ‘Superman’ Character

Superman will fly into theaters everywhere in just a few weeks, and one of the film’s stars has just revealed some crucial details about their character. After making her debut in The Last of Us earlier this year as Dina, Isabela Merced has been set for the role of Hawkgirl in Superman, a role she’ll also reprise that role in Peacemaker Season 2 this August. Merced’s Hawkgirl will star alongside Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific as members of the Justice Gang, but there will be plenty of other heroes to collaborate with. The trio recently sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly to talk about Superman, and she spilled some crucial details about Kendra Saunders and her background before we meet her:

"She has that past of being Thanagarian, and that's important because you want to make sure she has that military kind of vibe, but also she's a modern girl."

Hawkgirl is a warrior reincarnated from a Thangarian, a race of winged aliens from the planet Thangar. Fillion even described Kendra Saunders as “quite powerful,” which says a lot coming from the group’s resident Green Lantern. Merced also mentioned that audiences won’t learn much about Hawkgirl in Superman because “James isn’t showing all his cards,” but that we will see her again in Peacemaker. The trio confirmed that they will be interviewing John Cena’s Christopher Smith for a role in the group, but that it “doesn’t go well.” Peacemaker will return with its second season on August 21, and James Gunn has said that it will tie directly into the rest of the DCU. It’s unclear at this time if Peacemaker will feature in Superman in any capacity, but it would be a nice surprise trick up the sleeve if he does have a cameo.

Starring in the two leading roles in James Gunn’s Superman are David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan — the duo will play Clark Kent, aka the Man of Steel, and the Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult has also been cast to play the villainous Lex Luthor, and he was at the forefront of the most recent Superman trailer. Gunn has also recruited Skyler Gisondo to play Jimmy Olsen, and the film will also star Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord.
