The Last of Us Star Melanie Lynskey Wants an Origin Story Spinoff for Kathleen

While Melanie Lynskey's screen time was limited in the first season of The Last of Us, her character, Kathleen, quickly stood out as a fan favorite for viewers. While the series of events that happen in the first season make it unlikely Melanie Lynskey would appear as Kathleen in the show's upcoming season 2, perhaps fans still have not seen the last of her in that role. As Lynskey tells Variety, she's up for returning for a limited series spinoff that delves into the origin story for Kathleen, revealing how she came to wind up in the position that she's in.“If they wanted to go back and do an origin story, I would be there for it,” Lynskey says. “The story of how this woman got into this crazy position would be really interesting."While The Last of Us is based on the popular video game of the same name, Lynskey's character was original to the show, and there was no Kathleen Coghlan in the game. The character is presented in the TV show as the leader of a revolutionary movement in Kansas City. Some viewers questioned how the character was able to get into this position, and that's the question that Lynskey would be able to better answer with a spinoff series showcasing Kathleen's rise."I'm playing a person who meticulously planned & executed an overthrow of FEDRA. I am supposed to be SMART, ma'am. I don't need to be muscly. That's what henchmen are for," Lynskey previously said online in response to the criticism.[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/melanielynskey/status/1623401604534902784[/EMBED_TWITTER]Lynskey clearly took to her role as Kathleen quite well, which may have been a surprise to her, as she was not familiar with the video game. She tells Variety that she probably wouldn't have accepted the part if not for husband Jason Ritter, whom she later helped get a cameo on the show as a Clicker, convincing her to take it on.“He said, ‘You have to do it, no questions asked.’ I was like, ‘But I’m tired.’ He was like, ‘I don’t care,’” Lynskey recalls.
