The Detroit Lions could be on the verge of something that's going to work out very well for them. They've been needing a big X receiver for some time now and after Tim Patrick had a nice debut last Sunday, the Lions are looking to use him a lot more going forward. That means the Lions are going to have to add him to the 53-man roster soon.
That doesn't have to be this week. The Lions can still use his other two practice squad elevations before they make the move, but it could be as early as this week if they just want to get it done. There has to be a corresponding move. Someone has to go. We went through the roster and picked three players that could soon by waived to make room for Patrick.
James Houston
By now this should surprise absolutely nobody. It's not working out. The Lions gave up on a three year plan to making him a SAM linebacker this summer and there was some back and forth over whether or not he would make the initial 53-man roster.
He did, but so far his season has consisted of being a healthy scratch in Week 1 and playing just three snaps in Week 2. Houston's career is nowhere near over. He should have a chance to bounce back and show what he did in his rookie season, but it's likely not going to happen in Detroit.
Isaiah Williams
This is why it's hard to fall in love with players during the preseason. Williams was great and everyone saw that. There was no way he wasn't going to make the roster. The problem is the Lions don't really have room to do anything with him since they have guys that already do what he can do. With the addition of an X receiver, Williams is going to get even more buried than he already was.
There's a chance that after a couple weeks into the season that other teams forgot abotu him and they won't try to claim him and he can make a nice spot on the practice squad, but we'll see. A good young player that deserves to be where he's at, but he's just in a hard spot here.
Colby Sorsdal
Sorsdal had a rough camp and a rough preseason. He needs way more time to get used to being an NFL tackle and the thought of putting him in a game right now is kind of scary. The Lions have their swing guy in Dan Skipper, so they can afford to make this move.
Plus they have Jamarco Jones on the practice squad and he showed some good stuff during camp and the preseason. The Lions should be able to get Sorsdal back after he clears waivers.
