The Lions' offseason decisions are kind of looking pretty bad right about now originally appeared on A to Z Sports.
Let's get a little reactive here, shall we? What's the one thing Detroit Lions fans wanted more than anything this offseason? It was an edge rusher. Someone who could help Aidan Hutchinson get pressure on the quarterback.
Yes, some people wanted an All-Pro guy like Myles Garrett or Trey Hendrickson and that was just never going to happen. The money was too rich and the team's were unwilling to make the move. I talked myself into both of them for a mintute too, but it was very unlikely.
It never really needed to be a superstar. Just a solid guy capable of applying pressure and getting home occasionally would have been big. The Lions had that guy in Za'Darius Smith, but they released him early in the offseason. Maybe there might be a comeback for him, but it hasn't happened yet.
In free agency, the Lions brought back Marcus Davenport, who is good when he's healthy, but has never had a season without an injury, and they got a big deal with Levi Onwuzurike who has also dealt with injuries and as of Thursday, is now slated to miss the firsr four games of the season with an injury.
The Lions didn't sign any outside pass rushers. Ok, that was fine. The draft was full of them. Then the Lions waited until the sixth round to take one when they selected Ahmed Hassanein. Don't get me wrong, I think he's going to be great, but I don't know when that's going to happen or if it's this year.
So at this point, the Lions' defensive line consists of Aidan Hutchinson, a rookie in Tyleik Williams, Roy Lopez, and maybe a rookie in Hassanein. Again, we don't know when they plan to start him.
The Lions don't have Alim McNeill till November, Ounwuzurike till October, Davenport might get hurt early like he did in Week 3 last year, Josh Paschal is starting camp on the NFI, and Mekhi Wingo is starting on the PUP. The latter can come off at any time, but this does not look great.
If everyone were healthy, I'd say something to the effect of, "This is good, but one more guy still would have been worth it." Now it looks more like something to worry about all summer. This team can't afford to lose more players if they have no intention of replacing them.
Brad Holmes has been a phemnomnal GM and he'll continue to do so. Evey player he did sign and did draft was great addition. But at this point, I cannot tell you why he does not want to get another edge rusher on this team. But I can tell you that it could lead to bad things for a team that is trying to win the Super Bowl this year.
