What the Los Angeles Rams end up doing with Matthew Stafford is anyone’s guess, but with star wide receiver Cooper Kupp on the trade block, there is at least talk of Stafford being moved.
It should be noted that ESPN insider Dan Graziano stated Stafford will likely stay put in Los Angeles, but without a reworked contract, anything could happen.
“Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is likely to return to L.A. in 2025, according to sources close to the situation...Something will have to be done with Stafford’s contract, though, as was the case last offseason...Look for the team to convert salary into bonuses again to lower the hit and move Stafford’s 2025 compensation into a range more befitting of a good starting NFL quarterback,” Graziano wrote.
What would the general cost of any trade for Stafford be for the Steelers? CBS Sports took a stab at it, and using the Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets trade, came up with a possibility.
The Steelers would send their first-round pick this year in exchange for the Rams' first-round pick this year, which is just a five-spot difference, in addition to their 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 conditional second-round pick that could become a first-round pick depending on how many snaps Stafford plays.
That is about right for what Rodgers went for at the time of his exit from Green Bay, and if the Steelers want to maximize their Super Bowl window, this is a move that could be their big swing for the moon, but Stafford will need a reworked contract and started to show signs of decline.
On top of that, Stafford has often been injured, and with the Steelers' young but still growing offensive line, those concerns would not be quelled in Pittsburgh.
