We hate to even write this, but it looks like this is the way things are going at the moment. The Detroit Lions placed cornerback Emmanuel Mosely on the Reserve/Non Football injury/illness list on Saturday. That means he has to miss at least the next four games. If the Lions win on Sunday, his season is over. If they don't, he could potentially be back for the playoffs.
The Lions signed Mosely in free agency ahead of the 2023 season and once he was healed from the torn ACL he suffered in 2022, he was expected to be a starter in Detroit and a big part of the rebuild of the Lions secondary. When he came back, he played two snaps and then tore his other ACL. It was horrible to see.
The Lions loved his attitude and believed that he could still help them, so they brought him back. He suffered another setback early into camp when he tore his pectoral and that meant he had to be out for even longer.
Finally, the Lions were ready to start his 21-day clock on November 6th. After 15 days, the Lions activated him and added him to the 53-man roster. He was set to make his return, and the Lions put him on the field against the Colts in Week 12. He played 15 special teams snaps.
We have not seen him on the field since then. He was a healthy scratch in Weeks 13, 14 and 15. Then in Week 16, we got this from Lions' head coach Dan Campbell:
“Good, this is the best week he’s had since he’s come back from the injury. I just think he looks so much more comfortable, he’s moving around well, and it’s been really two great days for him.”
Then Moseley was active against the Bears, but he never actually went on the field for a defensive snap. He did play 14 special teams snaps though.
Moseley did not play against the 49ers on Monday night and was added to the injury report this week with an illness. He was designated as OUT on Friday and then the Lions put him on the reserve NFI list Saturday. That is likely going to spell the end of Moseley's time in Detroit. His contract expires after the season. You hate to see it end this way.
