The Texans social media team was taking on all comers after Houston's dominant victory over Dallas.
The Houston Texans delivered the second smackdown in an action-packed extended weekend at AT&T Stadium Monday evening, beating the Cowboys 34-10 three days after Jake Paul earned a decisive victory over Mike Tyson in a high-profile exhibition boxing match at the same venue.
So as the Texans salted away their first-ever victory in Jerry World, the team's X admin took a shot at the much-maligned Tyson-Paul bout, writing "Finally a real fight in Arlington this weekend." The snarky social media message attracted 28,000 likes and more than 1.4 million impressions, the second-most viewed post of the evening, fitting with the tremendous commercial success that was Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson.
According to data from Netflix, which broadcasted the event and faced harsh criticism for continued technical difficulties, more than 60 million households tuned into the exhibition fight. The co-main event between reigning women's lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, which Netflix claims to be the "most watched professional women's sporting event in U.S. history," reached another 50 million viewers. The Tyson-Paul gate surpassed more than $18 million as more than 72,000 fans piled into the massive Dallas-Fort Worth area arena, including celebrity guests Shaquille O'Neal, Michael Irwin and Daddy Yankee, among others.
Despite the unmatched fanfare of Friday's fight, the pedigree of each fighter was largely unknown entering the ring. Jake Paul cultivated his infamous celebrity through his massive YouTube platform before a series of boxing fights with fellow Internet figures and fighters in other combat sports, while Mike Tyson was arguably the most dominant heavyweight boxer in history during his 1990s prime but is currently 58 years old. After a first-round flurry, however, Tyson was decisively the weaker fighter, outpunched 278-97 as the judges declared Paul a unanimous winner after eight rounds.
The Cowboys' shortcomings, conversely, were more thoroughly outlined during a disastrous start to the 2024 season, entering Monday night's matchup with a lowly 3-6 record and four-straight losses. It was more of the same early as Joe Mixon scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to give a 14-0 lead after 15 minutes, and a crucial defensive touchdown helped the Texans blow open their dominant victory.
After the final whistle, the Texans' social media apparatus turned its attention toward the Cowboys. Dallas has been embroiled in an infamous "sun" scandal in recent weeks after wide receiver CeeDee Lamb attributed a dropped touchdown last week to the harsh glare from the west endzone at AT&T Stadium, and the Houston X admin grabbed two rectangular images of this glare to form an L over the Cowboys' home ground. The team's next post featured an edited Spotify image of artist Post Malone's song "Pour Me A Drink," photoshopping a Texans jersey onto the outspoken Cowboys fan.
