With The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon set to return soon with Season 3, another popular show just got an update: The Walking Dead: Dead City. The spinoff premiered in 2023, featuring two unlikely protagonists as a team: Lauren Cohan's Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan. Per AMC Networks, despite the mixed reviews for Season 2, The Walking Dead: Dead City will officially return with Season 3.
The upcoming Season 3 will welcome a veteran from The Walking Dead universe: Seth Hoffman. He will join Dead City as a showrunner, returning to the universe after having worked three years as a co-executive and writer on the original series. Hoffman wrote many iconic episodes, including Season 4, Episode 8, “Too Far Gone,” Season 6, Episode 2, “JSS,” and the iconic yet infuriating Season 6, Episode 9, “No Way Out.”
"We’re thankful to [creator and showrunner] Eli Jorné for two seasons of Dead City that took the story of these iconic characters in exciting new directions and broadened this thriving Universe by introducing a new corner of the walker apocalypse," Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said in a statement.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Will Start Production Soon
"I'm excited to have the chance to dive back into The Walking Dead Universe and work to deliver another dynamic season’s worth of stories to this epic franchise. It's a true honor to chart out the next chapter for Maggie and Negan's iconic adventures in Dead City," Hoffman said about his return to the zombie-filled universe. "Lauren, Jeffrey, and Scott are incredible creative partners, and I'm thrilled to collaborate with them to bring this story to life." Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Cohan, Morgan, Brian Bockrath, and Colin Walsh will executive produce alongside Hoffman.
The decision to renew the show comes after Dead City featured divisive reviews. Maggie and Negan's adventures in the post-apocalyptic Manhattan scored positive reviews from critics, as Season 1 had a stellar 80% approval. However, the audience wasn't sold on the controversial pairing, giving it a 59% rating, just below the threshold for a positive score.
Season 2 had worse reviews. It barely has a positive score from the critics, with a passable 63% rating, and an even lower score from the audience than Season 1, just 43% on the Popcornmeter. Overall, the series boasts a 71% approval rating from the critics and a lower 51% from the audience.
The announcement also comes with a little tease of what's to come. The description for the future season notes, "In season three, Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?"
Until there is any news about The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3's release, Daryl Dixon will return with Season 3 on Sept. 7.
