After a disastrous season last year, the Tennessee Titans have completely revamped their roster ahead of the 2025 NFL season. New general manager Mike Borgonzi was active during the free agency period of the offseason, and he continued to stay aggressive in the draft.
The Titans welcomed nine new draft picks into the fold, and the franchise signed a handful of notable undrafted free agents to compete for a roster spot as well. It is not uncommon for undrafted players to make the initial 53-man roster for an NFL team, especially not when these players have been vetted by an experienced executive like Borgonzi.
On Monday, the Titans made an announcement that they had signed undrafted wideout TJ Sheffield and tight end Drake Dabney to contracts after having impressive performances at rookie minicamp. In a corresponding move, the franchise released cornerback Virgil Lemons and safety Jerrin Thompson.
Neither of these defensive backs played in a game during their Titans careers, so their departure does not necessarily move the needle. However, Tennessee needs ample pass-catchers to surround franchise quarterback Cam Ward, and the additions of Sheffield and Dabney are a good place to start.
The Titans selected wideouts Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor, as well as tight end Gunnar Helm in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. They also added Ward's former teammate, wide receiver Xavier Restrepo, to the roster, so Sheffield and Dabney will compete with all these players for a spot on the team.
The Tennessee Titans are adding another rookie undrafted WR to their 90-man roster
The Tennessee Titans held rookie minicamp over the weekend. In addition to the nine draft picks and 16 undrafted free agents who participated in a team-like setting for the first time, the Titans hosted an additional 11 undrafted rookies on a tryout basis. It turns out one of them impressed Mike Borgonzi and Brian Callahan, earning a spot on the current 90-man roster.
The Titans are signing former UConn wide receiver TJ Sheffield. The deal was confirmed on by his representation via social media.
Sheffield is a bit of a local product. He hails from Thompsons Station, Tennessee and played high school football at Independence in Williamson County.
Sheffield transferred to UConn ahead of the 2024 campaign after spending multiple seasons previously at Purdue. This past year, the speedy playmaker produced 54 receptions for 505 yards and three touchdowns. Sheffield also made a drastic impact on special teams, returning 34 punts for 241 yards. He could immediately enter a multi-player competition at punt returner.
It was a career-best year for Sheffield in 2024, but he was a steady contributor at Purdue as well from 2021 to 2023 after barely playing in 2019 and 2020. In that three-year span prior to UConn, Sheffield accumulated 114 catches for 1,186 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. He also returned 32 career punts at Purdue.
The Titans selected two wide receivers during the 2025 NFL Draft, landing Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor during the fourth round. They brought one just undrafted free agent at the position, but it’s a fan-favorite in Xavier Restrepo, who played with No. 1 overall QB Cam Ward at Miami.
Sheffield faces an uphill battle to make the team in September, but earning a 90-man roster spot after a successful rookie minicamp tryout is a good start. Sheffield’s chances will increase dramatically if proves to be a dynamic weapon on special teams.
