During Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs moved to 7-0 after defeating their AFC West rival, the Las Vegas Raiders, 27-20 at Allegiant Stadium.
In the game, Mahomes broke yet another NFL record, one that left the GOAT himself, former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, impressed.
Mahomes, the former Texas Tech standout, recorded 262 passing yards to go with two touchdowns and an interception. With these numbers, he became the fastest player in NFL history to reach the 30,000-yard passing mark, doing so in just 103 career games.
The previous record holder belonged to the Los Angeles Rams' Matthew Stafford, who reached this mark in game 109. The next fastest players to hit this number were former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Kurt Warner and former Miami Dolphins star Dan Marino, both of whom hit 30,000 in 114 games.
When revealing his top five teams through eight weeks of the NFL season, Brady, who won seven Super Bowls with the Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, had a message for Mahomes after his latest achievement.
"Patrick, the fastest player to reach 30,000 career passing yards," Brady said. "What an accomplishment. Congratulations, Pat."
For the year, Mahomes hasn't quite lived up to what many people expect from a three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, at least on the stat sheet. He has completed a career-high 68.4% of his passes for 1,651 yards, eight touchdowns and a league-leading nine interceptions.
But, the 29-year-old continues to find ways to win, even with the amount of injuries the Chiefs are dealing with at the wide receiver position. Rashee Rice, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown and Skyy Moore have all been placed on injured reserve, while Juju Smith-Schuster is dealing with a lingering hamstring issue.
Even with these issues, Kansas City remains the team to beat in the NFL, holding sole possession of first place in the AFC and the entire league. This hasn't stopped the team from improving its threepeat chances as they have acquired new weapons in wideout DeAndre Hopkins and defensive end Josh Uche before the Nov. 5 trade deadline.
