The Los Angeles Dodgers will almost certainly be in the market for key upgrades over the next few weeks in hopes of revitalizing their roster before Major League Baseball’s July 31 trading deadline.
Despite sitting comfortably atop the National League West at 56-36, the Dodgers have several areas to address, including bullpen and perhaps third base depending on Max Muncy’s health.
It’ll come at a cost, though.
As sellers scour the Dodgers’ minor leagues for potential trade chips, one prospect who figures to garner heavy interest is 20-year-old outfielder Zyhir Hope.
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden suggested as much recently, writing that “if the Dodgers make yet another big trade deadline deal, most executives believe that Hope will be the prospect headliner going the other way.”
Hope was acquired before last season from the Chicago Cubs in a trade for first baseman Michael Busch and relief pitcher Yency Almonte.
He spent most of his season with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga of the California League, slashing .287/.415/.490 with nine home runs and 31 RBI in 54 games after missing significant time with a shoulder injury.
Hope has continued his impressive performance this season with High-A Great Lakes, batting .297 with nine homers and 54 RBI in 78 games. He’s also stolen 12 bases.
On Saturday, Hope will represent the Dodgers alongside pitcher Josue De Paula in the MLB Futures Game at Truist Park in Atlanta.
It’s no wonder teams covet Hope in trade talks. His potential is immense.
The Athletic’s Keith Law lists Hope 39th overall in his most recent prospect ranking, while MLB Pipeline has him 37th.
MLB Pipeline notes that “Hope has added significant strength since turning pro and does everything scouts want to see a young hitter do. He makes advanced swing decisions and quality contact, produces elite exit velocities and understands how to pull pitches for power.
“He has an efficient left-handed swing and could generate 30-homer pop once he learns to lift balls more consistently.”
Whether that’s with the Dodgers or someplace else remains to be seen.
Los Angeles has been pummeled by injuries. Twelve pitchers are currently on the injured list, including two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and Japanese rookie phenom Roki Sasaki. Tyler Glasnow, who last pitched April 27 because of a shoulder injury, is slated to return Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Those injuries could push the Dodgers into trading, and Hope will understandably be at the top of most teams’ wish lists.
