Trade Pitch Has Bruins Dealing Goalie to Oilers in Intriguing Move

The Boston Bruins could look to trade a goalie as they have an excess of them, and one trade pitch has them dealing one to the Edmonton Oilers.

Could A Bruins & Utah Goalie Swap Work? | NHL Trade Rumors

Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Bruins trade Joonas Korpisalo to the Oilers.

Bruins acquire:

  • Nathaniel Day
  • 2028 fourth-round pick

Oilers acquire

  • Joonas Korpisalo

The proposed deal would be an intriguing one as Edmonton would acquire a goalie who can be part of the tandem in return for a goalie prospect and a mid-round pick.

The Bruins would acquire Day, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft by Edmonton. The 20-year-old played in the OHL last season but did appear in three games in the ECHL. In the three games in the ECHL, he went 2-0 with a 0.43 GAA and a .981 SV% as he had two shutouts.

In return, Boston would trade Korpisalo, who could be on the move after the Bruins signed Michael DiPietro. Korpisalo has three years left on his five-year, $20 million deal. He would be part of a tandem with Stuart Skinner and add some stability to the Oilers’ goaltending.

Korpisalo has been a starting goalie in the NHL before. Last season with Boston, he went 11-10-3 with a 2.90 GAA and a .893 SV%. He was an All-Star in 2020.

Insider: Bruins Could Move Korpisalo

Boston has Jeremy Swayman as the starting goalie, and also signed DiPietro this offseason.

With that, NHL insider James Murphy of RG.org reports that the Bruins have gotten trade calls on him.

“They got calls and I know that,” a trusted NHL source told RG in April. “What materialized and how far, I can’t tell you, but there was some interest.”

However, Korpisalo’s agent Markus Lehto claimed that the goalie hasn’t requested a trade.

“There is no truth to that; Joonas loves it in Boston,” Lehto replied in an email to RG.org when asked if there was any truth to the rumor that his client had asked out of the Bruins.

Korpisalo did vent his frustration with his lack of playing time at the end of the season. He felt like he deserved to start more games than he did.

Bruins’ GM Don Sweeney, meanwhile, said he agreed that Korpisalo likely should have played more than he did last season.

“Again, Joonas was honest at the end of the year in saying that he believed we should’ve used him more, especially when Jeremy was struggling, and I was honest that I didn’t disagree with him,” Sweeney said on July 1.

However, with Boston signing DiPietro, Korpisalo’s playing time could be even less next season unless he is traded.

Oilers Planned to Explore Goalie Market

Edmonton has lost in the Stanley Cup Final in back-to-back years, despite its poor goaltending.

After Edmonton lost in the Final again, the Oilers’ general manager Stan Bowman said the team would explore adding a goalie.

“It’s something we’ll investigate this summer — what’s the best path moving forward for our team. It’s hard to predict where that’s going to go. We have to have lots of conversations about what other teams are looking to do,” Bowman said.

Skinner and Calvin Pickard both have one year left on their contracts.
