The Kansas City Chiefs are heading into a crucial offseason after a heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl.
Kansas City finished the season with a 17-3 record, including the playoffs. While they were dismantled in Super Bowl LIX, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles, 40-22, the Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans en route to the final game.
Following a brutal loss for the Eagles in the Super Bowl, the focus turns toward free agency. The Chiefs have one of their most talented players set to hit the open market: offensive lineman Trey Smith, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and played four seasons in Kansas City.
As Smith nears free agency for the first time in his career, USA Today's Jacob Camenker predicts that the talented guard will leave Kansas City and sign with the New England Patriots.
The loss of Smith would be a brutal blow for Kansas City. He's established himself as one of the Chiefs' cornerstone pieces on the offensive line, having been selected to his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2024.
Camenker believes the Patriots would be inclined to make the move for Smith, given their need for an upgrade at guard. If Smith were to leave Kansas City for New England, he would be blocking for promising young quarterback Drake Maye.
The Patriots finished the 2024 season with a 4-13 record. Maye was selected to his first Pro Bowl Games as a rookie, capping off the season with 2,276 passing yards and 15 touchdowns, completing 66.6% of his pass attempts.
